There is no external antenna. Basically the radio and cassette work very well with exception of above issues. You are purchasing this issue as is. I was unable to test the record function as do not have a blank cassette tape.

Electronic enthusiast needed to fix the issues. Volume control works well. Radio works fine - tunes in to all channels, however the red line for tuner does not move.

Cassette tape recorder: plays fine, however the rewind and fast forward functions do not work.
